Biography

Frances Perkins was born in Boston on April 10, 1880, and worked as a factory inspector, suffragist, social worker, sociologist, and writer. She served as United States secretary of labor from 1933 to 1945, the longest tenure anyone has held in that position, and was the first woman to serve in a presidential cabinet. A member of the Democratic Party and supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, she helped make labor issues central to the New Deal coalition and advocated for immigrants' rights. She remained in office throughout Roosevelt's entire presidency, one of only two cabinet members to do so. Perkins died on May 14, 1965.
