Biography

Francis Parkman was born in Boston in 1823 and worked as a historian, travel writer, horticulturist, and writer. He authored The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life and a seven-volume work titled France and England in North America. Parkman served as a professor of horticulture at Harvard University and wrote multiple books on horticulture. He was a trustee of the Boston Athenæum from 1858 until his death in 1893.
