Francis Spellman was born in Whitman, Massachusetts on May 4, 1889, and worked as a Catholic priest and bishop. He served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston from 1932 to 1939, then as Archbishop of New York from 1939 until his death on December 2, 1967. Pope Pius XII created him a cardinal in 1946.
