Frank Lucas was born in La Grange, North Carolina, in 1930 and died in 2019. He operated as a drug trafficker in Harlem during the late 1960s and early 1970s, purchasing heroin directly from suppliers in the Golden Triangle region of Southeast Asia rather than using intermediaries. Lucas claimed he smuggled heroin by concealing it in coffin pallets of deceased American servicemen, a story depicted in the 2007 film American Gangster, though his Southeast Asian associate Leslie "Ike" Atkinson disputed this account.
