He worked as a film producer and animator, serving as executive in charge of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio. He produced the Tom and Jerry cartoon series and won seven Academy Awards for Best Animated Short Films. The studio he oversaw employed animators and directors including Hugh Harman, Rudolf Ising, Tex Avery, Michael Lah, William Hanna, and Joseph Barbera, and released cartoons featuring characters such as Droopy, Butch Dog, and Barney Bear.
