Nelson Appleton Miles was born in Westminster, Massachusetts, in 1839 and died in 1925. He served as a military officer and lieutenant general in the United States Army, fighting in the American Civil War, the final phase of the American Indian Wars, and the Spanish–American War. From 1895 to 1903, Miles held the position of Commanding General of the United States Army, the last to do so before the office became the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army in 1903.
