Heber Doust Curtis was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on June 27, 1872, and died on January 9, 1942. An astronomer, he took part in eleven expeditions to study solar eclipses. Curtis argued that galaxies beyond the Milky Way existed and participated in the 1920 Shapley–Curtis Debate regarding the size and galactic structure of the universe.
