Biography

Henry Molaison was born in Manchester, Connecticut, in 1926 and worked as a laborer. In 1953, he underwent bilateral medial temporal lobectomy to treat his epilepsy, during which surgeons removed parts of his brain including the anterior two thirds of his hippocampi, parahippocampal cortices, entorhinal cortices, piriform cortices, and amygdalae. The surgery partially controlled his epilepsy but resulted in a severe side effect: he lost the ability to form new memories. He died in 2008.
