Biography

Hiram Rhodes Revels was born free in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1827. He worked as a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and as a college administrator, and lived and worked in Ohio before the Civil War, where he voted. The Mississippi legislature elected him to the United States Senate as a Republican in 1870 to represent Mississippi, making him the first African American to serve in either house of the U.S. Congress. He died in 1901.
