James Dewitt Yancey, known professionally as J Dilla, Jay Dee, or Dilla, was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 7, 1974, and died on February 10, 2006. He worked as a record producer, rapper, and composer, emerging from Detroit's underground hip-hop scene in the mid-1990s as a member of Slum Village. Yancey was a founding member of the Soulquarians, a musical collective active during the late 1990s and early 2000s, and collaborated with Madlib as the duo Jaylib to release the album Champion Sound. His final album, Donuts, came out three days before his death, and he produced the Pharcyde's album Labcabincalifornia.
