Biography

James Abourezk was born in Wood, South Dakota, in 1931 and worked as an attorney, politician, lawyer, and writer. He served in both chambers of the United States Congress for one term each and was the first Arab to serve in the United States Senate. In 1980, after leaving Congress, he founded the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee with the aim of countering anti-Arab racism. Abourezk died on his ninety-second birthday in 2023.
