James Fenimore Cooper was born in Burlington City, New Jersey in 1789 and died in 1851. He worked as a novelist, children's writer, military officer, and writer, producing historical romances set in the colonial period through the 19th century. Cooper spent much of his childhood and the final 15 years of his life in Cooperstown, New York, founded by his father William Cooper. He attended Yale University for three years as a member of the Linonian Society and joined the Episcopal Church shortly before his death.
