James Monroe was born on April 28, 1758, at Monroe Hall in Virginia. He worked as a statesperson, diplomat, governor, farmer, politician, lawyer, and writer. Monroe served as the fifth president of the United States from 1817 to 1825 and was the last president of the Virginia dynasty. During his presidency, he issued the Monroe Doctrine, a policy intended to limit European colonialism in the Americas. He died on July 4, 1831.
