James Oliver Curwood was born in Owosso, Michigan, in 1878 and worked as a writer, novelist, journalist, screenwriter, conservationist, and environmentalist. His action-adventure books, frequently set in the Hudson Bay area, the Yukon, or Alaska, ranked among the top-ten best sellers in the United States during the early and mid 1920s. At least one hundred and eighty motion pictures were based on or directly inspired by his novels and short stories. At the time of his death in 1927, he was the highest paid author in the world.
