Joanne Chory was born in Methuen, Massachusetts in 1955 and worked as a plant biologist and geneticist. She held a position as professor and director of the Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and served as an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She died in 2024.
