Biography

John Frederick Kensett was born in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1816 and worked as a painter and engraver. He belonged to the second generation of the Hudson River School and created landscape paintings of New England and New York State. His mature work depicted tranquil scenery with spare geometry, including series of paintings showing coastal promontories set against smooth water. He was a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and died in 1872.
