Biography
Born in Boston in 1738, John Singleton Copley worked as a painter in colonial New England before relocating to London in 1774, where he remained for the rest of his life. In England he continued to paint portraits and also created large history paintings that incorporated modern subjects and contemporary dress. His financial circumstances deteriorated in his later years, and he died in debt in 1815.
