Biography

Joseph Hooker was born in Hadley, Massachusetts on November 13, 1814, and served as a military officer in the Seminole Wars and Mexican–American War, earning three brevet promotions before resigning from the Army. When the Civil War began, he joined the Union as a brigadier general and saw action at Williamsburg, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, subsequently receiving command of the Army of the Potomac. At the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863, he was defeated by Confederate general Robert E. Lee. He died on October 31, 1879.
