Josiah Bartlett was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1729 and died in 1795. He worked as a physician, lawyer, judge, and governor, and served as a delegate to the Continental Congress for New Hampshire, where he signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. He attended the 1787 convention that framed the Constitution and served as the fourth governor of New Hampshire and as chief justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court of Judicature.
