Biography

Kay Hagan was born in Shelby, North Carolina, in 1953 and worked as a lawyer, banker, and politician. She served in the North Carolina Senate from 1999 to 2009, then as a United States senator from North Carolina from 2009 to 2015 as a member of the Democratic Party. In 2008 she defeated Republican Elizabeth Dole, and in 2014 she lost her re-election bid to Republican Thom Tillis. She died in 2019.
