L. Ron Hubbard was born in Tilden, Nebraska in 1911 and died in 1986. He wrote pulp science fiction and fantasy novels early in his career, then authored Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health in 1950 and established organizations to promote its techniques. He founded Scientology in 1952 after losing intellectual rights to his Dianetics literature in bankruptcy, and led the Church of Scientology until his death.
