Leo Joseph Ryan Jr. was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1925. He was a teacher and politician who served in the California State Assembly representing the 27th district before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he held California's 11th congressional district seat from 1973 until his assassination in 1978 during the Jonestown massacre.
