Lewis Howard Latimer was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1848 and died in 1928. He worked as a drafter, inventor, engineer, and teacher, developing an evaporative air conditioner, an improved method for making carbon filaments in light bulbs, and an upgraded toilet system for railroad cars. In 1884 he joined the Edison Electric Light Company as a draftsman.
