Lilla Cabot Perry was born in Boston in 1848 and worked as a painter, translator, artist, poet, and writer. She painted portraits and landscapes in the American Impressionist style, having studied under Claude Monet, and did not receive formal training until age thirty-six. Her work was shaped by the Boston School, her travels in Europe and Japan, and her association with artists of the Impressionist, Realist, Symbolist, and German Social Realist movements. She died in 1933.
