Biography

Linus Pauling was born in Portland, Oregon in 1901 and worked as a chemist, physicist, biophysicist, biochemist, crystallographer, peace activist, Esperantist, and activist shareholder. He published more than 1,200 papers and books, approximately 850 of which addressed scientific subjects. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 for his scientific work and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962 for his peace activism. He was one of five people to win more than one Nobel Prize, the only person to receive two unshared Nobel Prizes, and one of two people awarded Nobel Prizes in different fields. He died in 1994.
