Marie Laveau was born on September 10, 1801, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She worked as a hairdresser, religious leader, and occultist. Laveau practiced Voodoo, worked as an herbalist and midwife, and was known in New Orleans. Her daughter, Marie Laveau II, also engaged in rootwork, conjure, and practices drawing from Native American, African, and Louisiana Voodoo traditions as well as Roman Catholicism. Laveau died on June 15, 1881.
