Marie Tharp was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on July 30, 1920, and worked as a geologist, oceanographer, cartographer, and surveyor. During the 1950s, she collaborated with geologist Bruce Heezen to create the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor.
