Marshall Applewhite was born on May 17, 1931, in Spur, Texas. He worked as a cult leader, music educator, and stage actor. He founded and led the Heaven's Gate new religious movement and organized a mass suicide in 1997, which was the largest mass suicide to occur inside the United States. He died on March 26, 1997.
