A professional boxer and world heavyweight champion from June 1934 to June 1935, he went by the nicknames the Livermore Larupper and Madcap Maxie. Two of his fights received Fight of the Year ratings from The Ring magazine. Beyond boxing, he worked as a referee and appeared in film and television roles.
