Mercy Otis Warren was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1728 and worked as a philosopher, playwright, historian, poet, and writer. During the years preceding the American Revolution, she published poems and plays that attacked royal authority in Massachusetts and urged colonists to resist British infringements on colonial rights and liberties. Her husband, James Warren, was heavily active in the independence movement. She died in 1814.
