Nancy Kelly

American actress (1921–1995)

Nancy Kelly was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on March 25, 1921, and worked as a film, television, stage, and radio actor and model. She began as a child actress and model, appearing on CBS Radio's The March of Time and in several films during the late 1920s. In the late 1930s she returned to film while still in her teens, appearing in two dozen movies between 1938 and 1946, including Jesse James (1939) opposite Tyrone Power and Stanley and Livingstone (1939) with Spencer Tracy. She transitioned to stage work in the late 1940s and received a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in The Bad Seed on Broadway in 1955, then received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the 1956 film version, which was her final film role. Kelly worked regularly in television until 1963, later took over the role of Martha in the original Broadway production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? for several months, and made a handful of television appearances in the mid-1970s. She died on January 2, 1995.
