Nathaniel Palmer was born in Stonington, Connecticut, in 1799 and died in 1877. He worked as an explorer, naval officer, and engineer. Palmer was among the first persons to sight continental Antarctica, and in 1820 he explored Palmer Land aboard his sloop Hero. Palmer Land took his name.
