Ornette Coleman was a jazz saxophonist, trumpeter, and composer born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1930. He is known as a principal founder of the free jazz genre, a term drawn from his 1960 album Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation. His works often abandoned harmony-based composition, tonality, chord changes, and fixed rhythm in favor of an experimental approach to improvisation centered on ensemble playing and blues phrasing. Coleman died in 2015.
