Patricia Highsmith was born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1921 and worked as a novelist, short story writer, comic writer, screenwriter, painter, and literary scholar until her death in 1995. She wrote 22 novels and numerous short stories across a career of nearly five decades, and produced a five-book series centred on the character Tom Ripley. Her work resulted in more than two dozen film adaptations. Existentialist literature shaped her writing, which examined identity and popular morality, and novelist Graham Greene called her "the poet of apprehension."
