Paul L. Smith was born in Everett, Massachusetts in 1936 and worked as a film and television actor, director, and producer. Beginning in the 1960s, he appeared in feature films and occasionally television, often in roles as antagonists. His film credits included Midnight Express (1978), Popeye (1980), Dune (1984), and Red Sonja (1985), as well as the ABC miniseries Masada (1981). He died in 2012.
