Percival Lowell was born in Boston in 1855 and worked as an astronomer, mathematician, writer, businessman, and botanical and scientific collector. He founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and advanced theories regarding canals on Mars and a ninth planet in the Solar System. The work he began at the observatory contributed to the discovery of Pluto, which occurred 14 years after his death in 1916.
