Robert Carlyle Byrd was born on November 20, 1917, in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and died on June 28, 2010. He served as a United States representative from West Virginia's 6th congressional district between 1953 and 1959, then as a United States senator from West Virginia from 1959 until his death, making him the longest-serving senator in American history. A Democrat, Byrd was also a fiddler, historian, and lawyer.
