Robert Sanderson Mulliken was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, in 1896 and worked as a theoretical chemist and physicist. He played a primary role in the early development of molecular orbital theory and the molecular orbital method for computing molecular structure. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1966 and the Priestley Medal in 1983. He died in 1986.
