Robert Stroud was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1890 and died in 1963. A convicted murderer and federal prisoner, he spent time at Leavenworth Penitentiary, where he kept birds, sold them, and developed expertise in ornithology. From 1942 to 1959 he was held at Alcatraz, where prison rules prevented him from maintaining birds. He remained in the federal prison system from 1909 until his death and also worked as an author.
