Biography

Rosalind Russell was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1907 and worked as a film and stage actor, comedian, screenwriter, singer, and model. She performed as Hildy Johnson, a newspaper reporter, in His Girl Friday (1940) alongside Cary Grant, and as Sylvia Fowler in The Women (1939) with Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. Russell portrayed Mame Dennis in stage and film versions of Auntie Mame and appeared as Rose in Gypsy (1962). She received five Golden Globe Awards and a Tony Award during her career, along with four Academy Award nominations and a BAFTA nomination, and was honored with a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1973 and a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 1975. She died in 1976.
