Biography
Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in the North End of Boston in 1890 and became a philanthropist and socialite. Her father, John F. Fitzgerald, held seats in the Massachusetts State Senate and U.S. House of Representatives and served as Mayor of Boston. She married Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., who chaired the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Maritime Commission and served as Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Their nine children included President John F. Kennedy, U.S. Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Ted Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who founded the Special Olympics, and Jean Kennedy Smith, who served as Ambassador to Ireland. In 1951, Pope Pius XII granted her the rank of papal countess, making her the sixth American woman to receive this honor. She died in 1995.
