Sarah Grimké was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1792 and died in 1873. She moved to Philadelphia in the 1820s and became a Quaker, as did her younger sister Angelina. The sisters spoke on the abolitionist lecture circuit, drawing on their firsthand knowledge of slavery to urge its abolition, and became activists for women's rights.
