Biography

Scott Joplin was born on March 31, 1868, in Linden, Texas, and worked as a composer and pianist. He wrote more than 40 ragtime pieces, one ragtime ballet, and two operas. His "Maple Leaf Rag" became the genre's first influential hit and was later recognized as the quintessential rag. Joplin viewed ragtime as a form of classical music intended for concert halls and objected to its performance as honky tonk music in saloons. He died on April 1, 1917.
