Strom Thurmond was born in Edgefield, South Carolina in 1902 and died in 2003. He served as South Carolina's 103rd governor from 1947 to 1951, then represented the state in the United States Senate from late 1954 to early 2003, with a seven-month break in 1956. A Democrat in the Senate until 1964, he switched to the Republican Party that year. In 1948 he ran for president as the Dixiecrat candidate against Harry S. Truman, receiving over a million votes and winning four states.
