Thomas Ewing was born in Ohio County, West Virginia, on December 28, 1789, and died on October 26, 1871. A lawyer and politician from Ohio, he served in the U.S. Senate and held office as the fourteenth secretary of the treasury and the first secretary of the interior. He was the foster father of William Tecumseh Sherman.
