Val Logsdon Fitch

Biography
Val Logsdon Fitch was born in Merriman, Nebraska, in 1923 and worked as a nuclear physicist. In 1964, working with James Cronin at Brookhaven National Laboratory using the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, he conducted an experiment on K-meson decay that demonstrated certain subatomic reactions do not follow fundamental symmetry principles; specifically, a reaction run in reverse does not retrace the path of the original reaction, establishing that subatomic particle reactions are not indifferent to time. This work led to the discovery of CP violation and resulted in Fitch and Cronin receiving the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics. He died on February 4, 2015.
