He worked as a cartoonist, animator, and comics artist across multiple mediums including film and comic strips. He created the comic strip Little Nemo and the animated film Gertie the Dinosaur, released in 1914. Due to contractual obligations, he published work under the pen name Silas on the comic strip Dream of the Rarebit Fiend.
