Zitkala-Sa was born on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota in 1876 and died in 1938. She was a writer, editor, translator, musician, educator, and political activist of Yankton Dakota heritage, also known by her married name, Gertrude Simmons Bonnin. Her works examined the tension between the majority culture in which she was educated and the Dakota culture of her birth and upbringing. Her later books brought traditional Native American stories to a widespread English-speaking readership.
