History & significance

A group of three lead working coes, a shaft and a dressing floor on Longstone Edge is a lead mining site located in Derbyshire, England, representing industrial activity from the early modern or medieval period onwards. The monument comprises three bell-shaped or conical pits known as coes, characteristic features of lead ore extraction, together with an associated vertical shaft and a dressing floor where extracted ore would have been processed and prepared. Such installations reflect the long tradition of lead mining in the Derbyshire Peak District, an area of significant mineral extraction stretching back at least to the medieval period. The physical remains at Longstone Edge preserve evidence of the technological practices and landscape exploitation involved in the location and extraction of lead ore from surface deposits and shallow underground workings.
