Acton Burnell Castle is a moated fortified site in Shropshire, England, consisting of a substantial stone chamber block set within earthwork defences and an associated tithe barn. The castle was constructed in the late thirteenth century, likely in the 1280s, as a residence for the Burnell family, prominent landowners and administrators in the region. The surviving masonry structure represents the residential tower or solar block of the medieval complex, evidence of the domestic wealth and status of its builders during the height of the Edwardian period. The site's combination of stone architecture with earlier earthwork defences reflects the transition in English castle design from purely military strongholds to fortified residences of the gentry class.
