The castle was constructed in the late thirteenth century, likely in the 1280s, as a residence for the Burnell family, prominent landowners and administrators in the region. The surviving masonry structure represents the residential tower or solar block of the medieval complex, evidence of the domestic wealth and status of its builders during the height of the Edwardian period.
